May 9 • 11:10 a.m. Harbor Patrol officers responded to a report of a 27-foot sailboat aground near Light #4. The vessel was towed clear of the beach, and it continued cruising under its own power.

April 16 • 8 a.m. Harbor Patrol officers contacted the operator a 14-foot powerboat towing a surfer in the surf zone east of Stearns Wharf, without a spotter or a PFD. Officers terminated the skipper’s voyage and provided him with a copy of “The ABCs of California Boating Law.”

April 3 • 2:55 p.m. Channel Islands Harbor Patrol officers received a report of people jumping off the wharf, into the harbor. Two officers responded, and although no one was found in the water, officers discovered an unconscious teenager on the wharf. They provided emergency medical care, and the teen was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

March 24 • 1:30 a.m. Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol officers responded to a report of a juvenile elephant seal in strange surroundings, on the corner of Cabrillo Boulevard and State Street. Harbor Patrol officers responded, captured the animal and notified the Marine Mammal Center.

Oceanside Harbor
March 19 • 8:46 p.m. A vessel attempted to enter the harbor, but overshot the entrance and drove up onto Harbor Beach, according to reports. Oceanside Harbor Patrol officers received a mayday call from the vessel, a 45-foot fishing boat with three people on board. Fire department personnel, lifeguards and police responded. Lifeguards safely rescued the three people from the boat and a line was secured from the vessel to a patrol boat. After a lengthy pull on the line, the vessel headed back to sea. However, the tow line parted and the vessel beached itself for the second time, police reports stated. The line was reconnected and the vessel was safely towed into the harbor.

March 5 • 8:02 a.m. Harbor Patrol officers responded to reports of a suspicious person seen jumping the fence of the East Basin E Dock Cove and jumping onto a sailboat located midway down the dock on the west side.

Feb. 16 • 2:33 p.m. Orange County Sheriff's Harbor Patrol officers responded to a call that a 60-foot motoryacht had lost power and was adrift in the middle of the channel, near a barge. Officers tied a line on the boat and waited for a commercial assistance company to arrive.

Feb. 3 * 3:20 p.m. Deputies responded to an emergency report of a vehicle in the water at the county launch ramp, at the end of “H” Basin. Boat Crew deputies located a 2006 Lexus, which was totally submerged. All passengers were accounted for, and the vehicle was towed out of the water.

Jan. 15 • 3:15 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers received a call from a subject stating he was in the water and needed assistance. According to officers, they later discovered that the subject was making false reports from a couple of blocks away, in his RV.

Dec. 12 • 2:27 p.m. Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol officers removed a 15-foot section of a tree from the harbor entrance.

Nov. 23 • 4:32 p.m. Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol officers received a complaint from a harbor charter boat operator that four people aboard a small powerboat near the #8 marker were exposing themselves to patrons. The complaining party requested that they be stopped but not prosecuted.

Nov. 14 • 8:10 a.m. Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol officers received a report from the operator of a fishing vessel that a 40-foot panga was heading in a northwest direction from between Santa Rosa and San Miguel islands. The reporting party saw two people aboard, and the panga appeared to be heavy in the water. Information was passed on to Coast Guard personnel and the Joint Agency Taskforce. The panga, with three people aboard, was located by helicopter. A Coast Guard cutter intercepted the panga 15 miles south of Point Conception.

Oct. 19 • 1:35 p.m. While Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol officers were towing a disabled vessel back to the harbor, a Jack Russell terrier puppy jumped off the boats bow into the water while under way. After 20 seconds, the small canine resurfaced. The puppy was rescued and returned to its owner.

Oct. 2 • 3:45 p.m. Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol officers responded to a report at the maritime museum of a subject who approached a group of children and staff affiliated with a visiting tall ship and allegedly began yelling profanities and disrupting the children’s field trip. The subject was discovered to have two outstanding no-bail felony warrants. He was arrested and transported to county jail.

Sept. 28 • 3 a.m. Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol officers responded to a report of a fishing vessel that sank in its slip at Marina 1. The owner was contacted and salvaged his vessel.
