SANTA BARBARA COUNTY

Santa Barbara Harbor

May 156:40 p.m. Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol officers responded aboard Patrol Boat #1 to multiple reports in the Summerland beach area of a horse in the water, swimming out to sea. Working with Carpinteria Fire Department personnel and State Lifeguards, the horse was located more than 2 miles offshore, swimming toward the oil rigs. Firefighters were able to hook the animal’s reins with a boat hook and brought it alongside the patrol boat. Harbor Patrol officers placed a tow line underneath the horse’s saddle and secured it to PB#1’s cleats and began slowly towing the animal back to shore. Fire Department personnel and lifeguards on paddleboards guided the horse safely back to the beach.

May 19 6:30 a.m. Harbor Patrol officers observed a powerboat that had sunk at its slip. Only a portion of the bow was above the water. A message was left with the registered owner, who hired a commercial dive company to raise his vessel.

May 20 • 9:45 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers responded to Marina 3 on a report that a vessel had been broken into and robbed. While waiting for Santa Barbara Police, Harbor Patrol officers detained three subjects who were allegedly attempting to gain entry into the marina wearing clothing that the original reporting part said were his. One subject was arrested on burglary charges and probation violations. The other two suspects were released because they were not involved in the actual break-in, officers said.
