Man killed at Oceanside Harbor in officer-involved shooting

OCEANSIDE— Police officials confirmed a man was fatally shot Monday morning when he reached for a firearm after being awoken and confronted by an Oceanside police officer on a bench in Oceanside Harbor.

The officer, who responded at 9:10 a.m. to a residential complaint of a man sleeping on a bench located adjacent to Oceanside Harbor, unloaded “at least three rounds,” according to Oceanside Police Lt. Leonard Cosby.

The incident was located at the 1300 block of Harbor Drive North, on the west side of the Oceanside Yacht sale building and just to the north of  O dock.

“Our dispatchers received a phone call to check a sleeper in our harbor,” Cosby said. “At about the same time, one of the officers who works the harbor was flagged by a citizen and asked him to check this person out.”

Cosby said the firing officer attempted to make contact with the man before noticing a handgun in his waistband.

“The guy made a movement for the gun and the officer shot him,” he said.

Responding officers on the scene conducted life-saving measure, but the man, who was flown to Scripps La Jolla, was later pronounced dead. Cosby said the time of death was not known and the man’s name will not be released until next of kin are notified.

Cosby added that the man is a confirmed and documented gang member from the San Pedro area, who had attempted to enter a locked boat dock area 20 minutes prior to the shooting.
