Rescue at Sea

The crew ofOasis V had an opportunity to test their seaman’s skills the afternoon of June 28 while returning from a race aboard Oasis Sailing Club’s 34-foot Catalina sailboat, when they were waved down by two men treading water next to an overturned Sea Doo approximately 1 mile off the Newport Beach Harbor entrance.

The crew, under the direction of Skipper Bill Jencks, with Steve Sawdon at the helm, pulled the two men on board where one of the men started to go into shock. The crew radioed the harbormaster who dispatched a rescue boat to assist and retrieve the half submerged watercraft. Club members Bill Badenoch and Don Sheridan and a guest focused on trying to warm up the sick men, while Oasis V made for the Coast Guard Station in the harbor. The two men were visiting from India and had rented the Sea Doo for the day.
