The Back Story: Built in 1937 as a sportfishing vessel by Shell Oil Vice President W.P. Durkee, Hel-Port II was designed by Nicholas Potter and built by Fellows & Stewart. Durkee was an avid angler and enjoyed fishing at Catalina Island. Accordingly, Hel-Port II spent a lot of time moored in Avalon Harbor. At one point, she apparently featured an aft deck and bait well.

What’s Inside? Hel-Port II’s deck is made of teak and her deck is constructed of Douglas fir on oak. The house is made of mahogany. Two Kermath engines power the vessel. Refitted in 1989 and 1993 with bronze fasteners, Hel-Port II also features copper fuel tanks with 100 gallons of gasoline capacity. The vessel’s 12-volt system was reportedly re-wired. Other new features include new hatches, keel bolts and transom.

Everyday luxuries: Nearing her 80th birthday, Hel-Port II is still capable of heading out to Catalina for an overnight trip. The interior helm is highlighted by a 12-volt refrigerator, galley to starboard, sink and upper and lower saloons.

Other interesting tidbits: The vessel is also a member of the Classic Yacht Association.
