U.S. Power Squadron celebrates 100th anniversary

STOCKTON – The San Joaquin Delta Power Squadron of Stockton will commemorate 100 years of safe boating during an event that will feature hands-on training and boater education.

Scheduled to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 25 at the Waterfront Warehouse at 445 W. Weber Ave. in Stockton, the festival’s program includes several educational activities.

Guests can dock their boat at the guest dock for a free vessel safety check; examine the Search and Rescue display provided by the Stockton Fire Department or learn more about eh Dockwalker education program where they will receive a free boater kit.

At the art table, kids can take home a free coloring book. Other activities include learning how to Restore Save the Delta; finding out more about Stockton’s oldest powerboat and sailing fraternities—Stockton Yacht Club and Stockton Sailing CLub; learning how the U.S. Coast Guard and Auxiliary work together, and finding our more about the Stockton Maritime Museum.

There will also be a display on the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Rescue Dogs

The U.S. Power Squadron is a safe boating organization that was founded in 1914 to assist sailboats that had been becalmed and endorsed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt- then secretary of the Navy. The organization has chapters throughout the U.S.

Based in Virginia, the Power Squadron teaches safe boating in a classroom and hands-on environment. Once a student passes the initial public boating classes they are invited for membership where more advanced classes are available from seamanship, weather, cruise planning, engine mechanics, celestial navigation and others.
