Charity Bay Race kicks off June 12

SAN DIEGO — Racers will have a unique opportunity to buy their handicap up, or buy their competitor’s handicap down, during Southwestern Yacht Club’s 28th annual Charity Bay Race. The event offers racers a chance at payback for a great cause.

The three-day event begins with a Friday Night Handicap Buy Up/Buy Down Party from 6 -7:30 p.m., June 12, at the club. At that time, participants can strategically purchase time before the weekend race series. The $50 entry fee includes two tickets to the barbecue and after race party.

Racers get two chances to buy up or buy down with the first being during registration and the second at the party. Crew and friends can buy boats up and competitors down. There is no limit to purchasing 3 seconds ($20) up or down.

All proceeds benefit ElderHelp of San Diego, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing personalized services and information that helps seniors live independently in the comfort of their homes.

“This is a great way to raise money for ElderHelp and you can go after the guys who are always beating you,” said Mike McNabb, Charity Bay Race chair. “It’s all in great fun and for a great cause.”

The events are all part of Southwestern YC’s Benefit on the Bay, which began May 2 with the 45th annual Anglers’ Bottom Fishing Tournament. The day included a full day of fishing, a fish fry dinner and live and silent auctions. A Party at Sunset is scheduled for June 13 with an evening of cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, drawings, and a silent and live auction.

On June 14, racers will take off on the 10-nautical-mile course around San Diego Bay. The day ends with an after race barbecue and party. Tickets are $15 per person.
