Kettenburg & Classic Yacht Regatta sails into San Diego

SAN DIEGO – The 2014 annual Kettenburg and Classic Yacht Regatta, presented by the Ancient Mariners Sailing Society (AMSS) and hosted by San Diego Yacht Club, will hit the bay once again, June 27-29.

“This year’s Kettenburg and Classic Yacht Regatta continues as one of the West Coast’s premier events for classic sail and powerboats alike,” said John G. Driscoll, 2014 AMSS commodore. “Through the combined efforts of AMSS and San Diego YC, we plan to offer an amazing weekend of racing.”

San Diego YC has hosted the regatta since 2011, when AMSS expanded the format of its long running race to include all makes of classic, full keel sails boats and power boats.

The event features the inaugural Kettenburg and Classic Yacht Regatta, which is sponsored by leading California tenant-only representation firm, Hughes Marino. The Sunday bay race results are separately scored to determine the Hughes Marino Kettenburg and Classic Yacht Regatta Charity Cup Race results. All proceeds of the cup will be donated by AMSS to Maritime Museum of San Diego Ronald McDonald Charities of San Diego and Southern California youth/junior sailing programs.

“It is here that the racing results come into play by design, in an exciting way, with the fundraising proceeds in the cup allocated based on pre-race selections made by the top three finishers in the Charity Cup Races, “ said Kettenburg and Classic Yacht Regatta chairperson Christopher R. Barclay.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to continue our support of the Maritime Museum of San Diego and Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego, which this regatta has supported for each of the last three years,” Barclay said. “We are adding to our fundraising efforts in 2014 and that is why we have expanded our fundraising beneficiaries to include Southern California youth sailing programs.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to provide financial benefits to local sail club affiliated and school-affiliated sail programs,” he added.

The annual regatta welcomes all Kettenburg makes and models built before 1985 and all other full keel sailboats and powerboats of all wood hull construction built prior to 1985. The Kettenburg and Classic Yacht Regatta combines a classic boat showcase with two days of sail races and powerboat cruises. The sail portion of the regatta features competitive class racing, including two buoy races on June 28 and a scenic bay race on June 29.

Sponsors for the regatta include a wide range of local businesses such as Hughes Marino; The Log; Douglas K. Smith Marine Insurance; Waterpoint, a waterfront development at the former Kettenburg Boat Works site; OoCRB Advisors; Torrey Partners; Philip Thearle’s Autowerks; San Diego Marine Exchange and its sister stores, San Diego Sailing Supply and Downtown marine; Driscoll Inc.; VanBerg Construction; Gates O’Doherty Gonter & Guy LLP; O’Sullivan Bros.
