Sailing Spotlight on Scotty Hemstreet

REDONDO BEACH — King Harbor Yacht Club has nominated 9-year-old Opti sailor Scotty Hemstreet for the Association of Santa Monica Bay Yacht Clubs Junior Sportsman Award for his Corinthian Spirit.

Hemstreet sails out of King Harbor Yacht Club with the King Harbor Youth Foundation (KHYF) at least five days per week. Most Opti sailors sail at King Harbor YC twice a week, according to a press release.

“Scotty is an absolute joy. He helps everyone he sees at the King Harbor YC with rigging, carrying sails, etc.,” said King Harbor Yacht Club commodore Debbie Helling. “He likes sailing with the older kids because he sees them as mentors. His attitude and exuberance are contagious.”

Each club gets to nominate one sailor for each award. Sportsman is awarded to a sailor for demonstrating the Corinthian spirit — an exceptionally high level of sportsmanship. The Yachtsman Award is based on competition results. Luke Pond, a 14-year-old sailor has been nominated for Junior Yachtsman.

KHYF Director Anne Popolizio added: “Nominating Scotty for this recognition was obvious. On several occasions he regularly goes out of his way to help another sailor. He is a great sailor and an even better sportsman.”
