WORSA announces new name

DANA POINT — The Women’s Ocean Racing Sailing Association (WORSA), which relaunched in January of this year after a three year hiatus, is now Women’s Sailing Association  ?  Orange County (WSA-OC). Along with the new name, the organization rolled out a new logo which updated their familiar logo featuring three pink sails.

Commodore Valerie Rhodes explained the name change by saying, “WORSA has been a well regarded name in the Southern California sailing community for many years but we wanted a name that reflected our broader mission of coaching and supporting women sailors of all stripes; racers, cruisers, day-sailors as well as novice sailors.”

According to Rhodes, the organization’s membership has expanded quickly since the group’s relaunch and membership includes those brand new to sailing as well as those who have sailed around the world as licensed captains.

“It makes for a fun and interesting challenge to come up with programs and on-the-water events that meet the needs of our diverse membership,” Rhodes said. “The common theme though is that we all share a passion for the water, for sailing and for learning more about our sport.”

WSA-OC’s calendar features a program on June 2 that will present information about a proposed WSA-OC racing team as well as a “Welcome Aboard” presentation designed to introduce new sailors to some of the basics of sailing.

WSA-OC membership is open to both women and men. The public is invited to attend the next general meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 2 at Aventura Sailing Association in Dana Point Harbor. Visit wsaoc.org  to learn more.
