‘Ready, Set, Wear It!’ event kicks off Safe Boating Week

STATEWIDE — Boating enthusiasts and water aficionados are encouraged to help attempt to set a new world record for the most lifejackets worn during the sixth annual “Ready, Set, Wear It!” campaign scheduled for Saturday, May 16.

The event, sponsored by the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) and Canadian Boating Council, serves as a fun educational element just prior to National Safe Boating Week, May 16 to 22. Each year, organizations host “Ready, Set, Wear It!” events to help educate the boating public about the safety benefits of life jackets.

Participants — both local and around the world — will gather to set a world record for most life jackets worn and most inflatable life jackets inflated. The number to beat is 6,973 participants, a record set in 2014. Japan had the highest number of participants with 1,041 participants. The largest U.S. event was hosted in Covington, Ohio, with 441 participants.

At press time, San Luis Rey Sail & Power Squadron had signed up to host a lifejacket wearing event at noon on May 16 at Oceanside Yacht Club, 1950 N. Harbor Drive in Oceanside. For more information, contact suzycoop@gmail.com.
