Boaters tread water for 14 hoursposted: 7/8/2014
The Coast Guard said an off-duty detective and a firefighter, who were fishing for dolphin, located and recovered two people in the water off Hallandale Beach early Saturday morning June 21 and notified the Sheriff’s office, which in turn notified the Coast Guard.
The pair, identified as Sean McGovern, 50, and Mellisa Morris, 52, said they fell into the water from their 30-foot Island Hopper boat around 6 p.m. June 20 and were left behind as the boat was still underway.
They said they treaded water throughout the night until they were found by the fishermen.
The two were not wearing floatation devices and had nothing to signal help from or communicate with nearby boaters.
A Coast Guard vessel rendezvoused with the fishermen and transported McGovern and Morris to the Coast Guard Station at Fort Lauderdale where they were picked up by friends.
The Coast Guard said there were no reports of any injuries.
