LA JOLLA — Kayakers and small boat owners planning to launch from the La Jolla Shores boat launch ramp are advised to make other plans: The ramp will be closed indefinitely due to post-storm erosion, officials reported.
The launch ramp was closed after a portion of the ramp washed out in the storm that occurred the week of Jan.18.
A combination of high surf, high tides and extreme weather conditions pounded the area, causing a 2- to 3-foot straight dropoff from the asphalt to the beach.
“In the past, we usually have done soft fixes with sand – but, in this case, it has eaten underneath the road,” said Sgt. John Sandmeyer with the San Diego Lifeguard Service.
Coastline Parks Division employees placed K-rail on the ramp to deter visitors and cars from entering the road. Extensive erosion has caused portions of the road to cave in.
Located on Avenida de la Playa, the ramp is the only beachfront launch ramp within city limits and has served as a prime launching spot for kayakers and small boat owners.
Small vessels can be launched directly into the surf at the foot of the ramp. Vehicles are allowed to drive on the sand within a limited area at 5 miles per hour.
Erin Demorest of City Councilmember Sherri Lightner’s office reported the closure is only temporary. City crews are working to repair the ramp and reopen the facility as soon as possible. However, Demorest was unable to provide the ramp’s reopening date at press time.
