NEWPORT BEACH — The Governor’s Cup — the world’s oldest junior match racing championship — will take place at Balboa Yacht Club July 17-22. Many past participants have gone on to be victorious in sailing competitions throughout the world, event organizers said.

Past years’ teams have come from Australia, New Zealand, England, Brazil, Finland, Spain, Ireland and Bermuda.

The boats to be used are identical purpose-built Governors Cup 21’s provided by the Newport Balboa Sailing & Seamanship Association. This boat was designed by yacht designer and Balboa YC member Alan Andrews.

Teams consist of a skipper and two crewmembers. No competitor may have reached his or her 21st birthday before the first day of the regatta July 17.

Among the highlights of the event will be the presence of the America’s Cup trophy, an opening dinner, big-boat “Beer Can” racing and a gala trophy reception.
