SAN DIEGO — The Port of San Diego has received Platinum-tier recognition in the San Diego Association of Governments’ 2026 Diamond Awards, marking the fifth consecutive year the Port has earned the program’s highest level of recognition.
The annual SANDAG Diamond Awards recognize employers for programs that encourage employees to use alternative and more sustainable forms of transportation. According to Port officials, its commuter program is part of broader efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support goals outlined in the Port’s Climate Action Plan.
The program provides 100% reimbursement for employees’ out-of-pocket commuting costs when using options such as public transit, carpools and vanpools, including monthly bus, trolley and train passes. The Port also offers hybrid work arrangements, employee electric vehicle charging infrastructure and showers and changing facilities for employees who bike or walk to work.
Commuter information is provided to new employees, while additional outreach has included Bike Anywhere Day activities and Vanpool Lunch & Learn sessions.
According to the Port’s most recent commuter survey, 68% of employees reported commuting alone. The figure is below the Diamond Awards threshold of 80% single-occupancy vehicle use for recognition.
The 2026 award coincides with the Port’s Green Port Month, an annual initiative highlighting environmental programs, sustainability efforts and progress toward reducing emissions along the San Diego Bay waterfront.
