DANA POINT — Pacific Asian Enterprises (PAE), the Dana Point-based builder of Nordhavn passagemakers, has announced that it is ending production of its Nordhavn 41 and Nordhavn 51 models following economic challenges in Turkey that made it no longer financially feasible to continue building the vessels there.
The decision marks the end of production for two models that had gained a strong following among long-range cruising enthusiasts, particularly the Nordhavn 41, which saw 44 hulls completed during its production run. In total, 54 Nordhavn 41 and 51 yachts were built at the Telgeren & Partners shipyard in Istanbul.
According to PAE, the decision was made jointly with Telgeren & Partners after prolonged economic instability in Turkey created unpredictable production costs. The company cited persistently high inflation and government intervention in the Turkish currency as factors that made future yacht construction unsustainable.
Although approximately 10 boats remained under contract with retail buyers, PAE said it provided additional capital to ensure those vessels were completed and delivered at their originally contracted prices after the shipyard was unable to absorb the increased costs.
“It’s frustrating that the exciting Nordhavn 41 and 51 projects will end their production runs in this way,” said PAE President Dan Streech. “Realistically, there was no other answer.”
Streech emphasized that the decision wasn’t a reflection of the quality of the Turkish shipyard or its workforce.
He said the Telgeren facility consistently produced yachts that met Nordhavn’s exacting standards, adding that some of the most recently delivered boats rank among the finest ever built under the Nordhavn name.
While yacht models are typically retired because of declining sales or changing consumer demand, PAE said that wasn’t the case for either the Nordhavn 41 or 51.
“Models inevitably lose their appeal because they’re overshadowed by new designs, or their concept was simply not embraced by the market,” Streech said. “The Nordhavn 41s and 51s were just hitting their stride. They will be going out on top.”
As is standard practice when Nordhavn retires a model, PAE said the molds for both the Nordhavn 41 and Nordhavn 51 will be destroyed, ensuring no additional boats of either design will be produced.
For Southern California boaters, the announcement represents the retirement of two models from one of the region’s best-known yacht builders. Headquartered in Dana Point, PAE has long been recognized for designing and building ocean-crossing cruising yachts that have developed a loyal following among passagemaking enthusiasts both locally and around the world. While the Nordhavn 41 and 51 are leaving the lineup, the company said it remains committed to its broader range of long-distance cruising yachts.
