January Sailing Courses Offer a Fresh Start on the Water

As the new year begins, January is shaping up to be an ideal time for sailors to sharpen their skills or take the leap into sailing, with Aventura Sailing hosting a full lineup of courses and hands-on clinics in Dana Point. The January schedule offers opportunities for beginners, experienced sailors, and aspiring cruisers to build confidence and set the stage for a season of adventure in 2026.

For those new to sailing, ASA 101 Basic Sailing is offered on January 10, 17, 24, and 31, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This foundational course introduces sail handling, terminology, points of sail, and basic seamanship, giving students the skills needed to confidently crew or skipper a small sailboat. At the same time, sailors looking to advance can enroll in ASA 103 Coastal Cruising, held on the same dates — January 10, 17, 24, and 31 — from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., focusing on coastal boat handling, sail trim, anchoring, and decision-making underway.

For those eager to immerse themselves fully, the ASA 101/103/104 ProPack runs January 19 through January 25, combining multiple certifications into one intensive program designed to fast-track sailing education. Sailors with bareboat cruising goals can also take ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising, scheduled for January 22 through January 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., covering advanced systems, passage planning, and crew management.

Experienced sailors looking for a focused refresher can attend the ASA 101/103 Combo Clinic on January 18, a one-day program designed specifically for sailors who already have time on the water and want to fine-tune their skills.

Navigation skills take center stage with ASA 105 Coastal Navigation, held on January 5, 12, 19, and 26, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This classroom-based course dives into chart reading, piloting, and coastal navigation techniques that help sailors plan and execute safe passages.

Hands-on confidence building continues with Docking Clinics on January 18, offered in two sessions: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. These small-group clinics focus on one of the most challenging aspects of boating, helping sailors approach docks and slips with greater control and ease.

Rounding out the month is ASA 114 Cruising Catamaran, scheduled for January 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The course introduces sailors to multihull handling, maneuvering, and docking, opening the door to the growing world of catamaran cruising. With winter winds, lighter harbor traffic, and smaller class sizes, January offers an ideal learning environment. Whether the goal is mastering the basics, preparing for bareboat cruising, or simply docking with confidence, these courses provide a practical and rewarding way to start the year. For many sailors, investing in education now means more freedom, confidence, and memorable days on the water as the sailing season unfolds.
