Aug. 1 & 2 — ASA 101 Basic Sailing Course: Learn the fundamentals of sailing during this two-day American Sailing Association (ASA) certification course from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Aventura Sailing Association. The course is designed for beginning sailors and covers the skills needed to confidently operate a sailboat. Cost is $695 for members and $895 for non-members. Aug. 8 — Docking Clinic: Brush up on docking skills during Aventura Sailing Association’s Docking Clinic, offered from 9:00 a.m. to noon (currently full) or 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The clinic is ideal for members preparing to charter or anyone looking to improve their boat-handling skills. Cost is $99 for members and $150 for non-members. The Docking Clinic is included with ASA 101 enrollment. For more information, visit aventurasailing.com.

 

Aug. 8 & 9 — ASA 103 Coastal Cruising: Advance your sailing skills with ASA 103 Coastal Cruising, held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This course focuses on coastal navigation, boat systems and cruising techniques for sailors ready to build confidence beyond basic sailing. Aug. 15 — ASA 114 Cruising Catamaran: Gain experience handling a cruising catamaran during this on-the-water certification course from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The class is designed for sailors interested in multihull cruising and chartering. Aug. 17 through 23 — ASA 101/103/104 ProPack: Aventura Sailing Association’s weeklong ProPack program combines ASA 101, ASA 103 and ASA 104 certifications into one immersive course. Classroom instruction runs Aug. 17 through 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., followed by the ASA 104 liveaboard experience Aug. 20 through 23, including two nights moored at Catalina Island. The program is designed to prepare sailors for chartering and coastal cruising. Cost is $2,820 for members and $3,255 for non-members. Aug. 2 & Aug. 9Intermediate Surf Fishing Clinic (Beach Sessions): Participants in the Intermediate Surf Fishing Clinic will put classroom lessons into practice during guided beach fishing sessions. The program is designed to help anglers gain confidence and improve their skills in a supportive environment for women and families. Registration is $20. Sept. 13Boat Skills Fishing Trip: Santa Barbara Landing and the Coastal Conservation Association of California will conclude their Boat Skills Clinic with an on-the-water fishing trip, giving participants the opportunity to apply what they learned during the classroom sessions aboard a local sportfishing vessel. Ocean Institute Speaker Series to Explore the Evolution of West Coast Maritime Identity

Aug. 5 — Ocean Institute Speaker Series Explores West Coast Maritime Identity: The Ocean Institute will continue its Distinguished Speaker Series on Aug. 5, with a presentation by Susan Sirota, deputy director of the National Maritime Historical Society. Titled Navigating Maritime Identity: A Look at the West Coast Maritime Image, the program will explore how the West Coast’s maritime identity has evolved over time, examining the historical events, industries and traditions that have shaped the region’s connection to the sea. Drawing on her extensive background in maritime history, Sirota will discuss the roots of maritime identity and why preserving and understanding that heritage remains important today.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the presentation will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Ocean Institute, 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive, Dana Point. Admission is $10 or free for Ocean Institute members and students with valid identification. Tickets and additional information are available at oceaninstitute.org.
