OC Coastkeeper Launches SCUBA Scholarship Program on World Ocean Day

In recognition of World Ocean Day on June 8, Orange County Coastkeeper has launched a new scholarship program aimed at helping aspiring divers gain the skills needed to participate in marine conservation and restoration efforts.

The Costa Mesa-based environmental organization announced its new SCUBA Scholarship Program, which will provide selected recipients with up to $1,000 toward scuba training, certification courses, and essential diving equipment.

According to Coastkeeper, the program is intended to help develop the next generation of ocean stewards, scientific divers, and environmental professionals while making scuba education more accessible to a broader range of participants.

Scholarship funds may be applied toward certifications ranging from entry-level Open Water Diver courses to advanced scientific diving training. Coastkeeper officials said the program supports the organization’s broader goal of strengthening Southern California’s environmental workforce and expanding opportunities for community members to become involved in marine monitoring, restoration, and conservation projects.

The organization is particularly encouraging applicants from underserved and underrepresented communities to apply.

“For me, learning to dive completely changed the course of my career and deepened my connection to the ocean,” said Kaysha Kenney, marine restoration director for Orange County Coastkeeper. “I’m excited that this scholarship will help open those same doors for the next generation of scientific divers, restoration practitioners, and environmental leaders.”

The scholarship announcement coincides with World Ocean Day, an annual international observance focused on promoting ocean conservation and awareness. For Southern California boaters, anglers, divers, and other ocean users, the day serves as a reminder of the important role healthy marine ecosystems play in supporting recreation, fisheries, wildlife, and coastal communities.

Applications for the SCUBA Scholarship Program are now being accepted through Orange County Coastkeeper. More information is available at coastkeeper.org/scuba-scholarship.
