Visitors exploring San Diego Bay may notice a fresh look along the waterfront as the Port of San Diego continues upgrading signs, crosswalks and wayfinding features throughout the tidelands.
The improvements are intended to make the waterfront easier to navigate while creating a stronger sense of place for boaters, pedestrians, cyclists, residents and visitors. From colorful crosswalks to updated directional signs, the project is designed to improve both safety and the overall experience of moving through the bayfront.
One of the most noticeable additions can be found near the entrance to Harbor Island, where a creative crosswalk uses a gradient of colors inspired by San Diego Bay. Shades described by the Port as Tidelands Teal and Deep Water give the crossing a distinctive waterfront identity while also increasing visibility for pedestrians.
The Port said the crosswalk design was developed after studying how people move through walkways, pathways and roadways along the bay. In addition to adding visual interest, the brighter markings are intended to help guide pedestrians safely across traffic areas.
Directional and regulatory signage is also being updated throughout the waterfront. The new signs are intended to provide clearer information about routes, regulations and nearby landmarks, helping visitors find destinations more easily whether they arrive by car, bicycle, on foot or by boat.
Interpretive signs are another part of the effort. These displays will provide visitors with information about San Diego Bay’s marine life, birds, public art, environmental programs and waterfront innovation. Each sign is being tailored to reflect the character and history of its location.
For recreational boaters and waterfront visitors, the signage improvements offer practical benefits while also helping tell the broader story of San Diego Bay.
As the Port continues investing in public access and waterfront amenities, the new signs are expected to make the tidelands more welcoming, informative and easier to explore.
