A structure fire on Metropole Avenue in Avalon was contained in under an hour on Tuesday, April 21, prompting a temporary evacuation and swift response from local and regional emergency crews.
According to a notice posted on the city’s website, the Avalon Fire Department responded to the incident at approximately 12:01 p.m. One structure was destroyed, and one individual sustained a minor injury. Residents in the immediate area were asked to evacuate to City Hall as a precaution while crews worked to control the fire.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control in roughly 50 minutes, preventing what officials described as a potentially more severe outcome given the area’s dense layout and flammable surroundings.
Speaking later that day at a City Council meeting, Fire Chief Michael Alegria commended the response effort, noting that the location posed significant challenges due to close-quarter structures, vegetation, and limited access. He credited firefighters for their quick action, as well as the availability of a nearby hydrant, which allowed crews to deploy multiple hose lines and maintain water pressure throughout the incident.
Additional support was provided by Los Angeles County resources, including two helicopters and eight personnel, who assisted during the response. Fire crews also navigated access challenges by cutting through fencing to reach the structure more effectively.
Avalon officials noted that community members assisted by clearing areas and helping protect nearby homes, though crowd control presented some challenges during the response. Authorities emphasized the importance of keeping roadways clear for emergency vehicles, particularly in narrow residential areas.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is expected.
