REDONDO BEACH — For those seeking to explore the hidden wonders beneath the waves in Redondo Beach, Glass Bottom Boat offers a front-row seat to the marine life thriving just below the surface. For more than two decades, this glass-bottom boat tour has been a staple in King Harbor, inviting locals and visitors alike to experience the underwater world without ever getting wet.

The vessel is more than just a boat — it’s a gateway to an underwater world teeming with California Sea Lions, Garibaldi, Calico Bass, and other coastal creatures. Built in 1995 by Sub Sea Systems, it’s one of only nine glass bottom boats operating in California, with similar models in Morro Bay and Catalina Island.
At the helm is Captain Jake Mark, a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain who has been navigating the waters of the South Bay since 2015. A lifelong local, he brings a wealth of experience and a passion for marine life to every tour. With three kids of his own, Mark has made family enjoyment a cornerstone of the Glass Bottom Boat experience. “We can’t promise you’ll see a shark or a mermaid,” he says, “but we can guarantee you’ll see something memorable.”

Unlike typical glass bottom boats, this one is classified as a semi-submarine. “There’s a main deck at the surface and an underwater viewing room where guests can peer through large side windows, creating a submarine-like experience,” said Mark. Annually inspected and certified as a U.S. Coast Guard Inspected Vessel, the boat’s design features expansive 7’ by 2’ viewing windows that offer a mesmerizing look beneath the surface. Meanwhile, the top deck invites passengers to take in the sight of sea lions basking on the rocks or simply soak up the coastal charm that defines Redondo Beach.
Mark’s journey with the Glass Bottom Boat began long before he officially took ownership. Before the pandemic, he was managing the boat, but when operations were paused during the pandemic, he saw an opportunity. “I had the chance to buy it, and since then, my goal has been to create a family-friendly, educational experience for everyone,” he said.

Tours typically last about 45 minutes and remain within the calm waters of King Harbor, making it a comfortable ride protected by the break wall. “We spend about half our time on the top deck, where we share some local history.” According to Mark, “Redondo was actually the first port for Los Angeles and has over 130 years of maritime heritage.” The tour also includes a chance for kids to steer the boat and wear a captain’s hat, adding a memorable touch.
The second half of the tour moves below deck, where guests can view large schools of fish, including garibaldi, calico bass, opaleye perch, and top smelt. “We typically feed the fish during the tour and sometimes let the kids join in, but we do not feed the sea lions,” Mark said. “Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, sea lions are protected — so it’s illegal to feed, touch, or disturb them. We make sure to keep a respectful distance.”
Mark hopes visitors walk away with a new perspective of the waters off Redondo Beach. “A lot of people assume the waters in Los Angeles are dirty or polluted, but they’re actually quite clear and full of life,” he said. And for locals and tourists alike, the Glass Bottom Boat is a way to connect with that marine life while learning a bit about Redondo’s maritime history. “We do our best to ensure everyone has a great time, and we even offer a money-back guarantee if you don’t see wildlife,” he added.
For Mark, the Glass Bottom Boat is more than just a business — it’s a way to share a piece of Redondo Beach’s charm while fostering a greater appreciation for the marine world just below the surface. He and his crew are so confident in the marine life encounters that they offer a Wildlife Guarantee. While they can’t promise you’ll see a mermaid, you’re sure to at least spot one of the following: California Sea Lions, Garibaldi, Calico Bass, Sand Bass, Opaleye, smelt, perch, and/or pelicans. On the very rare occasion a guest doesn’t see any wildlife during the trip, the good Captain promises a full refund.
This commitment to delivering a memorable experience underscores the crew’s dedication to showcasing the best of Redondo Beach’s coastal environment.
Glass Bottom Boat also offers private charters, accommodating up to 19 passengers for special events or private tours. While the boat must stay within the harbor’s break wall, it remains a unique venue for gatherings, from birthday parties to sunset cruises.
For Redondo Beach, Glass Bottom Boat is more than just a tourist attraction — it’s a beloved fixture that connects the community to the natural beauty beneath the harbor’s surface. Local rediscovery or once-in-a-lifetime adventure — a ride aboard Captain Jake Mark’s Glass Bottom Boat offers a glimpse into an underwater world just beyond the glass.
