Redondo Beach isn’t just a sun-soaked spot to lounge on the sand — it’s a sailor’s playground. With King Harbor’s 1,458 slips and easy access to the Pacific Ocean, the city offers both beginners and seasoned sailors plenty of opportunities to hoist the sails and catch some wind. From learning the ropes to chartering a private sail or simply cruising the coast, Redondo Beach offers something for every kind of sailor.
One of the most popular spots to get started is South Bay Sailing, a local gem that’s been introducing sailors to the joys of the sea for nearly two decades. “We love welcoming new sailors and helping them gain confidence on the water,” says the team at South Bay Sailing. Offering a range of courses from beginner to advanced, the program takes place aboard a 26-foot J/80 sailboat, known for its stability and ease of handling. For those looking to earn their ASA 101 certification, South Bay Sailing provides a comprehensive eight-lesson course covering everything from man overboard drills to sail trimming and docking. “If you’re serious about learning, we’re serious about teaching,” they add.
If a relaxing day on the water is more your speed, South Bay Sailing also offers private charters on their J/80 sailboat or a 40-foot Farr sailboat, perfect for groups of up to six. Charter guests can kick back and cruise the southern Santa Monica Bay, enjoying the ocean breeze and picturesque views of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. BYOB and snacks are welcome, making it a customizable way to experience Redondo’s vibrant coastline.
Wes Huston, the President and Founder of South Bay Sailing, likens his business to The Log, both of which have become well-loved fixtures in their communities. “Just like The Log has been a beloved staple in your industry for years, we’ve been out here offering sailing lessons and excursions for over two decades,” he says. Huston points out that while they have some of the fastest and most exciting vessels for their size, it’s really the staff that keeps people coming back.
“A lot of us are locals from Redondo Beach, this small town in a big city,” says Huston. “We all have different things going on in life, but we’re out there sailing and having fun just like our customers. The mix of sailing knowledge and local stories makes every outing a good time.” He adds that their location is also a big draw: “We can sail right off the dock, so most trips don’t even need the motor – that’s pretty unique around here.” Huston notes that it all adds up to a great experience for both customers and staff, which might explain why so many of their instructors started as students.
For those looking for a more structured learning experience, the Redondo Beach Sailing Program offers classes through the city, including ASA 101, Basic Coastal Cruising, and Coastal Navigation. Classes are small, with just two to three students per instructor, ensuring personalized attention.
“Our mission is to make sailing accessible to the community while providing high-quality instruction,” says the city’s sailing coordinator.
While there’s currently a waitlist to enroll, the program is a great option for residents looking to sharpen their skills and become part of the local sailing community.
The city’s Boaters Program also gives ASA 101 graduates the chance to continue sailing every Sunday and access city-owned boats for a yearly fee. It’s a perfect opportunity to practice new skills, meet other sailors, and explore King Harbor’s scenic waters.
With so many ways to get out on the water, Redondo Beach is more than just a charming coastal town — it’s a sailing hub that invites you to dive in and discover the open sea. From mastering your first tack and jibe to unwinding with friends on a sunset cruise, Redondo Beach offers a sailing experience for every kind of sea lover.
