Tall ship ‘Pilgrim’ keels over

DANA POINT—One of the most iconic visuals at Dana Point Harbor is no more, as Pilgrim, the resident tall ship at the Ocean Institute dock, keeled in her slip overnight, it was announced on March 29.

  1. Older boats that do not fit into harbor redevelopment plans, that develop dangerous leaks which are neglected by their owners for not months, but years tend to sink and disappear after a short period of corporate public grief.

    1. I was lucky enough to work at Kettenburg Marine in the late 80’s and got to repair her shaft log, rudder log and do some planking repairs. She was a work of art. I hope she can be saved by someone. She is worth it.

      1. I stayed onboard as a child. They worked us like crew! 24 hours in and I got terribly sick with a high fever and cough. No one cared or called my parents. To add insult to illness, the press took pics of me scrubbing pans and posted those photos in the newspaper. One of the most horrible childhood experiences of my lifetime!

  2. When was the Pilgrim seal taken off the sign welcoming visitors to the harbor?

    I think it was at least a year ago.
