The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and West Marine have teamed up to launch a nationwide boating safety initiative designed to help boaters gear up for a safer 2025 season. From May 15 through May 26, the Auxiliary will provide free Vessel Safety Checks at select West Marine locations nationwide. These voluntary checks allow boaters to confirm their vessels meet federal safety standards without risk of citation or penalty.
“A Vessel Safety Check is a conversation — not a citation,” said Michael Plavnicky, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Branch Chief of Recreational Boating Outreach. ‘Our trained examiners are here to help boaters understand essential safety gear, identify potential issues, and feel more confident on the water.’
In addition to safety checks, the initiative includes year-round educational sessions at West Marine stores, covering topics such as navigation, emergency procedures, and seasonal preparedness. “We’re giving boaters access to trusted information and services that make every trip safer and more enjoyable,” said Paulee Day, West Marine’s Chief Operating Officer.
