Mission Bay
July 7 • 2:27 p.m. San Diego Lifeguard Service Boating Safety Unit (BSU) lifeguards received a report of an overturned vessel near the Bahia Hotel. The vessel self righted.
July 8 • 12:24 p.m. BSU lifeguards responded to a call from a vessel seeking assistance. Rescue West arrived on the scene and found the vessel had an extinguished fire. Vessel Assist took over the vessel tow operation.
July 8 • 3:08 p.m. BSU lifeguards responded to a report of a vessel accident on Mission Bay. Paramedics took one patient to a local hospital.
July 8 • 9:27 p.m. BSU lifeguards responded to a report of a pontoon boat needing assistance on the water in Mission Bay. Lifeguards on the scene provided assistance, and the vessel went on its way.
ORANGE COUNTY
Dana Point Harbor
July 21 • 7:13 p.m. Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol officers received a report of a boater trying to remove gasoline from a boat with a power vac. A gallon of foam was applied and the boat was towed to a buoy near the bait barge, where the owner completed the maintenance operation.
July 26 • 7:26 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers received a report of a boat stuck on a sandbar with four people on board. The boat was pulled off the shoal.
Newport Harbor
July 19 • 11:16 p.m. Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol officers responded to a report of a 40-foot sailboat adrift in the center anchorage with a overheated engine. They took the vessel back to its mooring.
July 20 • 2:56 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers found a small powerboat unoccupied and adrift. The owner was contacted, and the owner reported that the boat had been lost from a larger boat en route to Catalina. Officers took the vessel in tow and returned it to the owner.
July 20 • 7:52 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers received a report from a boat owner that an intoxicated “squatter” had passed out aboard his 45-foot sailboat. Officers boarded the boat and questioned the subject.
July 21 • 2:47 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers assisted a ski boat that had become disabled on the way back to the launch ramp, arranging a tow.
July 21 • 3:43 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers responded to a report of a collision between a rental pontoon boat and a neighboring boat.
July 21 • 5:05 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers and lifeguards assisted operators of two personal watercraft that had become disabled, swimming them out of the surf near Crystal Cove.
July 21 • 6:18 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers received a report of a 65-foot powerboat allegedly speeding in the main channel and cutting off two electric boats, almost hitting them. Officers contacted the operator of the suspect vessel.
Sunset/Huntington Harbour
July 20 • 2:54 p.m. Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol officers received a report of a 22-foot powerboat operating erratically in the surf, heading up the coast en route to Alamitos Bay. According to officers’ reports, the boat became swamped because eight people were in the bow area. The passengers were repositioned and continued cruising. July 21 • 4:06 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers received a report of a catamaran capsizing. The vessel was righted.
LOS ANGELES COUNTY
Marina del Rey
July 1 • 1:03 p.m. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Marine Patrol deputies conducted a boating stop in the main channel of Marina del Rey, near the turning basin. The master of the vessel was cited for a California Department of Fish and Game fishing license violation.
July 4 • 8:23 p.m. Just prior to the Fourth of July fireworks display, Marine Patrol deputies responded to a vessel collision in the main channel. No injuries were reported, but there was moderate damage to both vessels. According to deputies’ reports, a preliminary investigation by the boat crew revealed a violation of federal navigation law regarding vessels meeting in a crossing situation.
July 6 • 12:44 p.m. Marine Patrol deputies responded to a report of pollution in “C” Basin. After checking the area, no source for the minor pollution incident was located.
July 7 • 2 p.m. Marine Patrol deputies responded to a medical emergency on the north jetty. Deputies treated a woman for severe weakness and dizziness, and she was subsequently transported to an area hospital for evaluation.
July 9 • 5:24 p.m. Marine Patrol deputies responded to a report of a man allegedly creating a disturbance at the rental dock. After officers made contact with the subject, he was reportedly cooperative, and he left the area.
VENTURA COUNTY
Channel Islands Harbor
June 1 • 3:30 p.m. Channel Islands Harbor Patrol officers responded to a report of a 27-foot vessel taking on water in its slip at a private marina. The leak was from an exhaust hose, which was plugged and the vessel was dewatered.
June 3 • 9:45 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers responded to a report of a 27-foot sailboat aground on Silverstrand beach. Both people on board were safely on the beach with no injuries. The vessel was removed from the beach by the owner the following morning.
June 9 • 5:30 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers responded to a report of an 11-foot vessel disabled by Light #2. The vessel was towed to a private marina.
June 10 • 1:40 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers responded to a report of an 18-foot vessel disabled in the main basin. The vessel was towed to the launch ramp.
Ventura Harbor
July 13 • 12:30 p.m. Ventura Harbor Patrol officers monitored a mayday call of a vessel sinking off Ventura Harbor. Officers responded and found the vessel a quarter-mile north of the harbor, sitting level. The situation had stabilized because the operator turned off the engines. Officers took the vessel in tow and released it at the launch ramp.
July 15 • Harbor Patrol officers received a report from a boater that his vessel was disabled in the main channel. Officers responded, took the vessel in tow and released it at the launch ramp.
July 17 • 12:48 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers received a cell phone call reporting an injured woman on a boat, having difficulty breathing. Officers met the vessel outside the harbor and escorted it to the patrol dock. The patient was transported to a local hospital.
July 19 • 1:55 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers received a report from the marina manager of a vessel illegally secured to “D” Dock. According to Harbor Patrol reports, this situation had been repeated several times before, and the boater had become belligerent when the dockmaster contacted him. Officers issued a citation to the subject for mooring without permission.
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY
Santa Barbara Harbor
July 9 • 3:50 a.m. Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol officers responded to a report of an allegedly disturbed woman shouting, urinating on the dock and trying to untie boats in Marina 1. Officers said the woman was contacted on the walkway near “A” finger, shouting, crying and waving her arms. She reportedly told officers the foghorn was her family signaling her to the ocean. She was escorted out of the marina by Harbor Patrol officers and was warned not to return unless accompanied by a marina slip holder.
July 11 • 4:30 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers were informed by waterfront facilities staff that two intoxicated men were on the breakwater sidewalk, having come from Marina 1 and nearly stumbling into the water. The men reportedly went into a yacht club bar and were asked by club staff to leave the establishment. They reportedly refused. Harbor Patrol officers contacted the subjects, who said they said they were leaving. A yacht club member agreed to get them a taxi or walk them out of the area.
July 15 • 2 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers responded to a report of a sea lion on the beach east of Stearns Wharf. Officers located the large animal on West Beach, and found children standing next to it. Harbor Patrol captured the animal and educated the children and adults who were present about the dangers of standing close to wild animals.
July 23 • 7:10 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers aboard Patrol Boat #2 responded to a report of a brown pelican east of Stearns Wharf that had stolen a mackerel from a fisherman. The bird was captured in the water 200 yards east of the wharf. While officers removed monofilament line from the bird, it was found to have a large fishing rod still attached at the other end. All hooks and line were removed from the pelican, and the fishing rod was returned to its owner, along with a warning to fish with caution around opportunistic sea birds.
