SAN DIEGO (AP) ― A man forced to jump into the ocean as his boat took on water was rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter crew off Southern California.

The man called a Coast Guard operations center in San Diego on Nov. 6 and reported his 18-foot boat was in trouble west of San Onofre State Beach.

The Coast Guard says its helicopter reached the scene and remained overhead while awaiting the arrival of a commercial assistance vessel. But the man had to abandon the boat when it began to rapidly sink.

A rescue swimmer was lowered from the helicopter and the boater was hoisted aboard uninjured and flown to San Diego.

A tow vessel recovered the boat and brought it to Dana Point.
