Marquis Marriott Marina manager calls it a career

SAN DIEGO — The longest-serving dockmaster at San Diego’s Marquis Marriott Marina is riding off into the sunset, calling it a career after spending decades in the recreational boating universe. Ken Guyer will retire from his role as dockmaster on Sept. 30. He was named dockmaster of the Marquis Marriott Marina, home to 446 slips, in 2006. Frank Quan, who previously served as the harbormaster in Oceanside, will take over Guyer’s role on Oct. 1. Guyer’s 10-year tenure at Marriott Marquis Marina caps a 53-year career as a war veteran, fire department professional and marina manager. “This has been an excellent way to end my 53 years of working,” Guyer told The Log in a phone interview, commending Marriott for giving him an opportunity to finish his professional days at its downtown San Diego waterfront property. “I couldn’t ask for a better place to retire from.” During his time at the Marquis Marriott Guyer said the marina developed into one of the best communities in San Diego. 1. Did the electrical-caused fire of 5 yachts in Feb 2006 have anything to do with Key Guyer replacing someone and the SD Marriott Hotel and Marina being renamed to the Marquis Marriott Marina?
After all Marriott lost the lawsuit that followed due to their negligence for not doing yearly infrared inspections of electrical. This would have prevented that fire. People could have lost their lives and still can at Marriott properties. since they did not learn their lesson and still disregard the industry standard of minimum yearly inspections and stopped doing these yearly after 9-11 for simple cost cutting reasons. So to save $2500 /year Marriott lost $5 million and could have lost lives. Do you feel safe at a Marriott? “Electrical is still the Nr 1 cause of fires in buildings ahead of arson” according to EPRI (Electrical Power Research Institute), Palo Alto, CA

    1. The fire that you speak of was caused by an electrical short in one of the boats. Had nothing to do with the Marriott Marina or changing its name to marquis. It became the Marriott Marquis San Diego a Marina because it is one of the upper in properties near the convention center. Not sure where you got your information but it is wrong.
