The first of three Gompers class destroyer tenders, USS Yellowstone, was launched at National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. Jan. 27, 1979.
More than 4,000 people watched the $163 million ship slide into the bay. It was the first public launching in two years at NASSCO, according to the story in the February 1979 issue.
