Avalon Benefit 50 Mile/50K Run

AVALON, CA. – Trail running enthusiasts are gearing up for the annual Avalon Benefit 50 Mile/50K Run, set to take place on January 11, 2025. This year, the event has achieved a significant milestone, selling out all 1,000 registration spots nearly three months before race day — a month earlier than the previous year. Produced by Spectrum Sports Management, the event has become a testament to the growing popularity of trail running, a sport that has seen a participation increase of 31.4% between 2018 and 2022, solidifying its place among the top 10 fastest-growing sports in America.

Since its inception in 1982, the Avalon Benefit Run has offered participants the unique opportunity to traverse one of Southern California’s most breathtaking natural landscapes. Runners can choose between two grueling yet rewarding courses: the 50K (31 miles) or the 50-mile ultra trail, which holds the distinction of being California’s oldest ultra trail race. Both courses begin and end in Avalon, guiding runners through scenic vistas, stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, and even the occasional sighting of Catalina Island’s famous bison. Participants are supported by high-quality volunteers and aid stations along the way, many of which are renowned for their themed setups and surprises.

The event is not just about running; it also serves a charitable purpose. Proceeds from the Avalon Benefit Run will support the Avalon Lions Club, a cornerstone of community assistance on Catalina Island. The Lions Club’s efforts include providing annual scholarships to all graduating high school seniors pursuing higher education, helping families with medical expenses, and developing parks and playgrounds across the island. Additionally, the organization plays a vital role in preserving Catalina’s natural beauty through its support of the Catalina Island Conservancy.

“This event is truly an iconic race that showcases all of Catalina Island, a one-of-a-kind island with an incredibly supportive community,” said Mike Bone, President and CEO of Spectrum Sports Management. “Every year I look forward to working with the island’s local organizations to put on an event that provides the opportunity for others to see what a beautiful island these people get to call home.”

Beyond the event itself, the Avalon Benefit Run is part of Run Catalina Island’s prestigious Triple Crown Challenge. This endurance feat involves completing three key races — the Avalon 50 Mile/50K Run, the Catalina Island Marathon, and the Catalina Island Half Marathon — within a 12-month period. Participants who complete the challenge earn exclusive rewards, including discounted registration for all three races, unique race swag, a Triple Crown finisher jacket, Hi-Tec shoes, and a custom-designed belt buckle. Athletes can begin their Triple Crown journey with any of the three races, but all distances must be completed consecutively within a year.

The Avalon Benefit Run’s rapid sell-out reflects the event’s growing appeal and its reputation as a must-attend for trail runners. The combination of challenging courses, stunning natural scenery, and meaningful community impact has cemented its place in the hearts of runners and spectators alike. As part of Spectrum Sports Management’s portfolio, the event exemplifies the company’s commitment to delivering premier endurance experiences while fostering community and environmental stewardship.
