This seminal event should be a clarion call to policy makers to ensure that all components of life safety aboard a vessel are adequately considered and properly regulated so as to protect the public from mass disaster in open and littoral waters. Such components include, but are not limited to fire prevention, training and operational response by those with jurisdictional authority.
