Visitors to Laguna Niguel Lake this week were met with an unpleasant sight and smell as hundreds of dead fish were discovered along the lake’s shoreline near the inlet.
The fish kill, first reported by a local angler on the evening of July 20, included species such as carp, bass and bluegill. Witnesses described a strong odor in the area and said the dead fish appeared to be concentrated in the shallow waters on the east side of the lake.
While the exact cause has not yet been confirmed by local authorities, such incidents are often attributed to low oxygen levels in the water, sudden temperature changes, or runoff-related contamination — especially during warmer summer months.
Laguna Niguel Lake, a popular spot for recreational fishing and walking trails, is managed by Orange County Parks. No official advisories or closures had been issued as of the morning of Tuesday, July 22, but anglers and lake visitors are encouraged to stay informed by checking updates through the county’s parks department.
OC Parks has not yet commented on the event. The Log will continue to monitor this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
