The Balboa Angling Club is holding its Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet on Sunday, March 19 at 11:00 am at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club.
This year they have a Special Guest Speaker, Chugey Sepulveda, Director of Research and Education from the Pfleger Institute of Environmental Research (PIER). Chugey has a Ph.D. in Marine Biology (2005) from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San
Diego; a U.S. Coast Guard Captains License (2003) from the Maritime Academy; an M.A. in Biology (1999) from California State University Fullerton; a B.A. in Biology (1997) from California State University Fullerton; and is an Adjunct Professor at Centro de Investigación Científica y Educación Superior de Ensenada (CICESE).
Dr. Sepulveda is a fisherman and a research scientist. He has focused primarily on pelagic fish ecology and fisheries biology. Sepulveda attended California State University, Fullerton for his Bachelors and Masters degrees and later attended Scripps Institution of Oceanography for his doctoral work. At Scripps, Sepulveda worked with the late Dr. Jeffrey Graham on studies related to the movements and physiology of regionally-important species like the common thresher and mako sharks. Sepulveda transitioned to the Pfleger Institute in 2005 where he is now the director of research and education. At PIER Sepulveda has re-directed the Institute’s focus towards applied field research on species of regional importance. Specifically,
Sepulveda’s research interests are focused on addressing questions related to the sustainable management of California’s marine resources. Lastly, Sepulveda is an advocate of sustainable fishing operations, both recreational and commercial and enjoys the ocean on many levels. PIER is “Dedicated to the advancement of sustainable fisheries management” and the Balboa Angling Club is dedicated “To Promote the Conservation of Fish in Local Waters and Rod and Reel Fishing as a Sport” so we believe in the same things!
Please call the BAC and RSVP today. It’s only $35 for adults and $15 for juniors 11 years of age and younger. Payment must be received prior to the event.
