Boaters urged to use caution near construction zone as U.S. Army Corps of Engineers advance harbor protection project.
Repair work on the King Harbor breakwall is continuing this summer, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reminding boaters to exercise caution around construction equipment as crews work to strengthen one of Redondo Beach’s most important pieces of waterfront infrastructure.
The project, which began in late June, is expected to continue through September and includes repairs at multiple locations along the harbor’s protective breakwall. Construction activities require a work barge to move periodically throughout the project as crews complete repairs in different sections of the structure.
According to the City of Redondo Beach, work is taking place adjacent to the King Harbor Yacht Club docks before shifting to crane operations from Mole A. While the project is underway, visitors are encouraged to avoid the breakwall during active construction, and boaters are asked to maintain a safe distance from construction vessels, barges and equipment.
For recreational boaters entering or leaving King Harbor, maintaining a proper lookout and reducing speed near the work zone will help ensure the safety of both vessel operators and construction crews.
A construction staging area has also been established on Mole B, where equipment and materials are being stored to support the project. As a result, parking near Moonstone Park has been reduced while several spaces are being used for construction operations.
Despite the temporary impacts, the Army Corps has indicated it is working to keep Moonstone Park accessible throughout construction and allow the Lanakila Outrigger Club to continue its activities with as little disruption as possible.
City officials have also coordinated with the Army Corps and harbor stakeholders to minimize conflicts with major community events. Construction was paused over the Independence Day holiday weekend to accommodate the annual Fourth of July festivities and fireworks display, and work was also suspended during the Santa Barbara Race on July 25.
The breakwall serves as King Harbor’s first line of defense against Pacific Ocean swell, helping provide calmer waters inside the marina and protecting hundreds of recreational vessels berthed within the harbor. Maintaining the structure is considered critical to preserving safe boating conditions and ensuring the long-term resilience of harbor facilities.
Boaters using King Harbor are encouraged to remain alert while transiting near the construction area and follow any temporary safety advisories or directions issued by project personnel as work progresses.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers currently expects the breakwall repair project to be completed in September.
