Port Adding New Sand at Kellogg Beach

SAN DIEGO — The Port of San Diego will place approximately 2,200 cubic yards of natural sand at Kellogg Beach this month to help counter ongoing erosion and maintain public access along the southwestern shoreline of the Shelter Island Yacht Basin in Point Loma. Work began Sept. 8, 2025, with completion expected by month’s end, weather and tides permitting. For public safety, weekday beach access is being limited from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. during construction hours; times may vary based on conditions. Kellogg Beach, which spans roughly two blocks between Kellogg Street and McCall Street, has been operated and maintained by the Port since 1978, including periodic sand replenishment. The new material has been reviewed and approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Port staff to meet environmental standards and match the existing beach sand without creating conditions — such as excessive rock — that could diminish visitor experience. The Port’s Board of Commissioners approved the project and awarded the contract on May 6,2025, to Montano Pipeline Inc. of Chula Vista.
