SANTA BARBARA — The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) is now accepting applications for its 2026 Volunteer Training Program, inviting community members to take an active role in preserving and sharing the maritime heritage of the Santa Barbara Channel. The program offers a hands-on opportunity for individuals who enjoy local history, the ocean, and engaging with visitors of all ages.
Volunteers play a central role at SBMM, welcoming guests, interpreting exhibits, supporting school field trips, assisting with special events, and helping tell the stories that define Santa Barbara’s long-standing relationship with the sea. Located on the Santa Barbara Harbor, the museum features interactive exhibits that explore historic seafaring, commercial fishing, navigation, ocean exploration, and the channel’s unique coastal environment.
SBMM’s volunteer training program is designed to be both educational and engaging. Participants receive instruction in Santa Barbara Channel maritime history, exhibit interpretation, museum storytelling, and guest engagement. Training is led by experienced museum staff and seasoned volunteers, helping new recruits feel confident and connected as they step into their roles. In addition to learning opportunities, volunteers are invited to participate in appreciation events and become part of the harbor’s close-knit maritime community.
“Volunteers are truly the heart of our museum,” said SBMM Board President Alex Weinstein, M.D. “They play a huge role in creating great experiences for our visitors and in preserving Santa Barbara’s maritime heritage. This program gives volunteers a chance to make a real impact while also getting a behind-the-scenes look at our maritime history.”
Volunteer training begins March 17, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, located at 113 Harbor Way, Suite 190, Santa Barbara, CA 93109. The program includes hands-on training in guest services, education support, and special events.
“Our volunteer program is a perfect fit for individuals who are passionate about history, education, or the ocean,” said Nova Jesswein, SBMM Youth Education and Volunteer Manager. “Whether you’re retired, a student, or somewhere in between, you’ll find community here — and plenty of opportunities to learn and have fun.”
Those interested can apply online at sbmm.org/volunteer or contact Nova Jesswein at [email protected] or (805) 456-8748. Space is limited, and early applications are encouraged.
