South Coast Fish Report

Provided by Dana Wharf Sportfishing

Really nice weather played a big role in our week. Sunshine and really nice conditions made for fun late November fishing.

The 1/2 day trips fished mixed bass in some pretty clean 63° to 65° water. Small 5-inch sardine was the live bait this week, so there was some good bass catching on that. Flylined baits and sliding sinkers fished good. Anglers fishing dropper loops did well on the sheephead and some nice sand bass off the bottom as well. A couple of days, the half-day guys loaded up on the whitefish too.

3/4 day fishing has continued to be focused on the rockfish. Out deep on the 14 Mile Bank, we have had some good days and some more tricky ones. Day to day has been the deal out there, with some squid on the bank slowing things up in certain areas. But still some real nice quality on the Floridas and chilies. Also some nice bocaccio. The jig anglers did ok too, and again, they also had to work at it a bit more than usual but still ended up with some nice bags of fish by trip’s end. The more local rockfish down off San Onofre has been great too. Nice mixed bags of bocaccio, reds, chilies, and specks. There was also plenty of whitefish and sculpin to fill in the cracks and make up some solid bags of fillets.

Our hoop net trip that fished Friday night had seven keepers and over 60 shorts. The clean water had to be the reason the bugs were not crawling, but it was a good, fun time for the anglers nonetheless.
