South Coast Fish Report

Provided by Dana Wharf Sportfishing

Another super fun week of local 1/2- and 3/4-day fishing.

1/2-day action on the bass has remained pretty consistent, with good bites on both live bait and rubber lures. Water temps are still in the low 60s and clean, with good movement. There were also some nice sheephead caught on sinker rigs with shrimp and clam baits, along with a couple of halibut here and there on live bait fished on the bottom.

3/4-day rockfish action remained strong this week as well, with more local cod counts made up of reds, bocaccio, and mixed sculpin and whitefish. The sculpin has really been filling in, and with the year-end rockfish closure approaching, it’s good to see the whitefish and sculpin where they need to be.

In the deep zones on the 14, it’s been Floridas, bocaccio, and chilies filling the bags. Both bait fishermen and jig guys have been doing equally well. The bite still isn’t as good as it should be, likely due to squid still being on the bank. Not sure if it’s going to improve much before the year-end closure kicks in.

There are lots of big bonito along our stretch of the coast right now, and they’ve been a really fun addition to the counts this week. These are solid 5- to 10-pound fish, and they’ve been eating the 60–80 gram jigs really well. Both the 1/2-day and 3/4-day trips have been catching them, so toss a few jigs in the tackle bag if you’re coming with us in the next day or two before the rain.

As of the 12/21/25 bonito count: 324 jumbo bonito!
