South Coast Fish Report

Provided by Dana Wharf Sportfishing

1/2-day trips have been focusing on bass, whitefish, and sculpin. Water temps are right at 60°, so the surface action hasn’t been game on. It’s been more of the dropper-loop-setup game with 2–3 oz. of weight and heavier rubber lures fished on 1.5 oz. lead heads to get those baits and lures into the water-column zones where the fish have been hanging.

3/4-day trips have been out deeper for the sculpin and whitefish. Rubber lures like a twin-tail scampi or a swimbait fished on a dropper loop with a heavier 8 oz. torpedo sinker have been the sculpin setup of choice. Effective for sure. Avoiding the rockfish will be a challenge, but the flat, hard-bottom areas in 180–250 feet have been the best sculpin zones, with some nice whitefish in the mix, too. The sculpin will be a big focus during the rockfish closure.

More halibut in the mix, too. Everyone loves our halibut derby, and last Friday’s trip saw three legal halibut and a nice mix of short halibut caught, too. There were also plenty of other fish caught, like sand bass and sculpin, on that first drift trip of the derby. The drift trips are Fridays from 6:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. and are basically a dedicated 3/4-day trip solely focused on catching halibut.

Hoop-net trips are still running Friday nights. Last night’s charter had 200-plus shorts.
