South Coast Fish Report

Provided by Dana Wharf Sportfishing

Another solid week of both local and island fishing.

Water temperatures fluctuated a bit, with a few days in the 65-67 degree range and several recent days between 62 and 65 degrees.

Along the coast, the half-day boats fared well on bass and sheephead. Surface action for calico bass remained strong, with some nice fish around the kelp spots and hard-bottom areas. Fly-lined baits earlier in the week made for some fun fishing. Larger bait at the end of the week meant stripped sardines and cut baits got the bites.

A few anglers opting for artificial baits also did well. Swimbaits, flukes, A-rigs, and surface iron all produced fish this week. Some quality sheephead were caught as well, especially on specialty baits like shrimp and clam.

A few more halibut showed up in the mix too, with fish in the 7- to 10-pound range for the half-day boats.

Out deep, the 14 Mile Bank continues to be lights-out good. Doubles on the big bankies and chilipeppers kept the bait anglers busy. Jig fishermen crushed them as well on 250- to 300-gram jigs. Chrome, blue, and pink jigs were the most productive colors by far.

A few days, the three-quarter-day anglers got the job done early offshore before sliding into the beach to finish the day fishing bass.

The Fury spent a few days fishing San Clemente Island, where the surface action for calico bass remained very good. Fly-lined sardines and rubber lures were the hot ticket, with some fish also falling for surface iron. Anglers fishing the bottom found all the whitefish and sheephead they could want.

There were also some yellowtail opportunities around the island. The boat landed 15 fish one day, mostly in the 8- to 10-pound class, along a stretch of kelp. Some bonito were also caught on shiny jigs.
