US Wins Race 13; Needs 6 Races to Keep the Cup

SAN FRANCISCO (LOG NEWS SERVICE) — Emirates Team New Zealand’s hopes of winning the America’s Cup were thwarted again Sept. 20, this time by the clock. Instead of winds gusting over the safety limit causing a race to be postponed, it was the light winds on San Francisco Bay that did them in.

The Kiwis led in Race 13 on Sept. 20 by more than 1,000 yards on the second downwind leg when the 40-minute time limit for the race expired and the race was abandoned. The Kiwis had only about 1 nautical mile remaining to the finish when the limit expired.

Oracle Team USA stayed alive for another day, winning the re-sail of Race 13 Sept. 20 by 1 minute, 24 seconds.

New Zealand still leads the series 8-3. Oracle Team USA has won five races, but because of a two-point penalty by an international jury, needs six more consecutive wins to retain the Auld Mug.

Officials have scheduled Races 14 and 15 for Saturday, Sept. 21 — beginning at 1:15 p.m. The races are scheduled to be televised by the NBC Sports Network.
