Wilmington resident Yolanda De La Torre has been unanimously confirmed by the Los Angeles City Council to join the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners, the governing body overseeing the Port of Los Angeles. De La Torre, a longtime community leader, was nominated by Mayor Karen Bass, who emphasized her commitment to ensuring Wilmington’s voice is represented on the Board.
“As we move forward with recovery efforts from the recent windstorm, the Port of Los Angeles remains critical to rebuilding homes, businesses, and communities,” said Mayor Bass. “Yolanda’s deep ties to Wilmington, extensive experience, and unwavering dedication to families and seniors in the Harbor area will bring invaluable insight to the Commission.”
De La Torre has served the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles for nearly 30 years, including as executive director for Wilmington since 1995. She recently transitioned to vice president of the Mission Advancement Team, supporting fundraising efforts across 28 YMCA locations in Los Angeles County. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in human services from Springfield College and an MBA from the University of Phoenix and has been twice named Woman of the Year by the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce.
Replacing outgoing Commissioner Mike Muñoz, De La Torre fulfills the requirements of Measure HH, which mandates representation from both San Pedro and Wilmington on the Harbor Commission. Her term begins January 17, 2025.
