DANA POINT— This summer, the Ocean Institute is making waves with a lineup of new ocean experiences designed to spark curiosity, fuel exploration, and create lasting memories for visitors of all ages.

From snorkeling Southern California’s coves to sunset sailing aboard a historic tall ship, the Dana Point-based nonprofit is rolling out a series of programs aimed at immersing guests in the wonders of the sea. “These new experiences, from kayaking the harbor to nighttime shark feedings, are designed to inspire, educate, and ignite a lifelong love for the ocean,” said Sara Larrea, Senior Manager of Public Programs at the Ocean Institute.

Among the highlights is the “Paddle into the Wild” Guided Kayak Tour, a two-hour naturalist-led paddle through Dana Point Harbor. Participants will learn about marine life, local geology, and harbor history while spotting sea lions, seabirds, and possibly even bat rays. Tours begin in June, run Saturdays at 9 a.m., and are open to ages 3 and up. Adult tickets are $36, and children’s tickets are $25.

Also launching this season is “Snorkel Southern California: Underwater Paradise,” a semi-private snorkel tour in the clear waters of Shaw’s Cove. Designed for ages 8 and up, the tour includes gear, wetsuits, marine life interpretation, and a post-snorkel treat. Tours are offered weekly starting in June at 7:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m., at $64 per person with a two-person minimum.

Those looking to end their day on the water can hop aboard the historic Spirit of Dana Point for “Sunset Sails,” an evening cruise blending traditional sailing with breathtaking views. Guests can assist the crew or relax as the sun sets over the coastline. Select sailings run through August from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $65.

For adults 21 and over, “Dockside Drafts” offers a relaxed waterfront beer-tasting experience at the Maddie James Seaside Learning Center, with local craft brews, live music, and food trucks on select Saturdays starting in June.

For families with young children, the Ocean Institute is bringing back “Tiny Tots,” an early-learning program focused on sensory play, music, and hands-on science for toddlers ages 2 to 6. Sessions are held Mondays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., and registration is $20 per session, which includes both child and caregiver.

Rounding out the summer offerings is “Sharks After Dark,” a monthly evening event featuring bioluminescent exhibits, live shark feedings, hands-on science activities, music, and cocktails. This after-hours adventure is held one Friday a month beginning in June, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Admission ranges from $7.50 to $15, with food and beverages available for purchase.

From harbor paddles to moonlit shark encounters, the Ocean Institute’s summer schedule invites everyone to experience the ocean in bold and unforgettable ways.
