Bass fishing this week was a bit slower for the 1/2-day anglers. We had large sardines for our live bait, so some tactic adjustments were necessary. Rubber lures like the small flukes or small 3″ swim baits fished great for the calico bass and sand bass. Reverse dropper loops with stripped bait fished well too. We’ve been seeing some nice sheephead as well, and with all the commercial lobster gear soaking, we’ve seen the sheephead get more active. Anglers fishing shrimp have had some good success on the goats.
Out deep, the rockfish opportunity with the deep water opening up has been really good. We’re seeing some real nice quality cod for our efforts out there, with big bank rockfish, chilis, bocaccio, and some jumbo reds in the mix. If you’re coming 3/4-day fishing with us, I’d highly recommend bringing a rod with braid capable of fishing a heavy sinker. Anglers going the slow-pitch jig route did well too, fishing jigs in the 250–350g range.
Off the beach at Clemente, the Fury has had great fishing. There have been some nice shots at the yellowtail some mornings at gray light on the live squid and yo-yo jigs. Calico bass fishing has been good too on days with the smaller live bait. There’s also been some nice bottom action on the whitefish and rockfish, and they had a few bluefin in the mix on a couple of different 2-day trips.
We’re seeing classic fall fishing, and you can feel it in the cooler nights and mornings for sure.
