Southern California — BoatBot, a forward-thinking tech company focused on boating safety, has officially launched its new AI-powered mobile application, “Pocket Captain,” aimed at helping recreational boaters recall essential safety knowledge while underway. Developed in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the app puts vital information at the fingertips of sailors, anglers, and powerboaters — providing instant access to navigation rules, light and sound signals, emergency procedures, and more.

Designed by a team that includes United States Coast Guard-licensed Captain and Auxiliary member David Johndrow, the app was created to reinforce knowledge gained in boating safety courses such as Boat America, Suddenly in Command, and the USCG 6-Pack and 100-Ton license programs. “We recognized a common problem — people take the courses, but retaining all the material long-term can be difficult,” said Johndrow. “With Pocket Captain, boaters now have a tool that brings those lessons back into reach, exactly when they need them most.”
Flotilla Commander John Doogan of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary praised the tool’s potential. “This is like having your safety course notes right in your pocket,” said Doogan. “When faced with a tricky situation on the water, having fast, accurate access to this kind of information can be the difference between calm confidence and confusion.”
Available for free on both Apple and Google app stores, Pocket Captain acts as a virtual assistant for mariners. Its AI-powered engine — known as “Captain AI” — delivers clear, conversational answers to a wide range of boating questions. Whether you’re trying to remember what light combination signals a fishing vessel restricted in maneuverability, or need a refresher on how to read channel markers, the app is designed to provide fast, reliable guidance in plain English.
Features of the app include:
- Instant Q&A Functionality: Ask real-time questions about rules of the road, weather signals, emergency procedures, and more.
- Personalized Learning: AI adapts to individual users, offering tailored answers and explanations.
- Supplement to USCG Training: Perfect for anyone who’s completed or is currently taking boating safety courses.
- Classroom Integration: The app is now being offered as a free resource during in-person Auxiliary classes throughout select Southern California flotillas.
Beyond individual use, BoatBot’s Pocket Captain app has broader implications for community-wide safety. By offering the app free-of-charge as a supplemental tool during Auxiliary classes, the developers aim to strengthen retention and enhance on-the-water confidence for both new and seasoned boaters.
“This isn’t just about one captain or one crew,” said Johndrow. “It’s about creating a smarter, safer boating culture. By integrating AI with what we already teach in the classroom, we’re raising the bar for the whole boating community.”
BoatBot showcased its app at the 2025 Newport Beach International Boat Show, running May 1 through 4 at the scenic Lido Marina Village. Visitors can stop by Stand #7 to see live demonstrations of how Captain AI works and how the technology is being used to support safe and informed boating.
