California’s largest volunteer cleanup event is set to return in September, and organizers are encouraging marinas, yacht clubs, boating organizations, anglers, paddlers and other water enthusiasts to get involved.
The California Coastal Commission and the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways are inviting boating facilities and organizations throughout the state to participate in the 42nd annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
While the event is widely associated with beaches and the coastline, cleanup efforts take place across California, from inland lakes and rivers to mountain watersheds. Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the state, stretching from San Diego County to Modoc County.
Organizers note that participation isn’t limited to this one day! Through the year-round Coastal Cleanup program, individuals and groups can organize cleanups at any time.
Boating facilities, yacht clubs, marinas and aquatic organizations interested in hosting a cleanup site can coordinate with California Coastal Commission staff and local county organizers. Participating groups may choose to host private cleanups for members, tenants, staff and families or open their events to the public.
According to organizers, establishing a cleanup site is a straightforward process. Interested groups can contact Statewide Coastal Cleanup Day Boating Program Manager Vivian Matuk, who will connect organizations with their local county coordinator. Cleanup supplies and event-planning assistance are provided through the program.
Groups that are not ready to host their own site can still participate by joining an existing cleanup location in their area.
The annual event continues to generate a significant impact across the state. During last year’s cleanup, more than 39,800 volunteers removed approximately 358,768 pounds of trash from California beaches, waterways and coastal environments.
The boating community played a substantial role in those efforts. Forty-four boating facilities and organizations participated, contributing more than 2,000 volunteers who collected roughly 14,340 pounds of trash and recyclables. Volunteers also removed debris from the water using 107 kayaks, canoes and dinghies.
For yacht clubs, participation can also support broader community service and environmental stewardship goals.
California Coastal Cleanup Day has been endorsed by the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association and the Southern California Yachting Association since 2012. Participating yacht clubs may earn points toward Club of the Year recognition under the community service category.
Organizers say cleanup events provide an opportunity for boaters and waterfront organizations to demonstrate environmental leadership while helping protect the waterways they enjoy.
By organizing or participating in a cleanup, marinas, yacht clubs and boating groups can help reduce marine debris, improve local waterways and encourage future generations of boaters to become responsible stewards of California’s aquatic resources.
