Dana Point Yacht Club Welcomes New General Manager Max Pekcan

Dana Point Yacht Club (DPYC) has announced the appointment of Max Pekcan as its new General Manager, bringing a wealth of experience in the marine industry and business management to the nearly 75-year-old organization. According to Commodore Sue Ward, Pekcan’s expertise and deep-rooted passion for boating make him an ideal fit for the club’s mission.

“Dana Point Yacht Club has long been a hub for boating, camaraderie, and the Corinthian Spirit,” Ward said. “Max’s dedication and extensive experience will be a tremendous asset to our Club.”

Pekcan’s love for the ocean is lifelong, describing himself as “drenched in saltwater, covered in lacquer and paint, born into a family of sailors.” He began sailing at the age of six on skiffs and dinghies, spending summers aboard his family’s 45-foot wooden Colin Archer ketch. Over time, he expanded his expertise, running charters and sailing larger yachts throughout the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean seas. His professional background includes working for Lloyd’s of London, as well as managing marinas and hospitality venues, giving him a well-rounded perspective on both the operational and community-driven aspects of the yachting world.

Ward expressed excitement about Pekcan’s leadership, stating, “We are thrilled to have Max at DPYC. His combination of sailing knowledge and corporate experience will help our Club continue to thrive. His passion aligns perfectly with our mission to promote yachting, preserve tradition, and foster a strong sense of community.”

Since its founding in 1952, Dana Point Yacht Club has been dedicated to providing marine-based activities and opportunities for both Dana Point residents and the greater yachting community. Situated at the west end of Dana Drive, the Club has become a staple in the local maritime scene, hosting annual events and fostering philanthropic efforts that extend beyond the docks.

One of the club’s most well-known contributions was its commitment to philanthropy, regularly supporting causes that benefited the community. Last month, DPYC participated in the Festival of Whales’ 12th Annual Fish for Life Clam Chowder Cook-Off, and throughout the holiday season, the club collaborated with the Fifth Marine Regiment at Camp Pendleton to provide a festive holiday party and gifts for military families.

Among the Club’s signature events is the annual Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta, a major fundraiser that last year raised over $50,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley. The regatta, held every September, is a three-day event featuring yacht racing, a formal dinner, and a fundraising auction. Past beneficiaries have included the Ocean Institute, the Fifth Marine Regiment Support Group, and High Hopes for Cystic Fibrosis, reinforcing DPYC’s commitment to giving back to the community.

Beyond charity work, youth sailing education remains a core focus of DPYC. The club runs a Summer Sailing Camp for children from June through August, introducing local youth to safe boating practices, basic sailing skills, and a love for the ocean. “Another aspect of our mission is to maintain and grow the sport of boating,” Ward explained. “Through our youth programs, we aim to inspire the next generation of sailors and water enthusiasts.”

Since 1998, Dana Point Yacht Club has been housed in its iconic waterfront clubhouse, offering more than just a space for boating activities. “Although we’re located on the water, a lot happens ashore too!” Ward said. Club members enjoy a variety of social activities, including Bunco nights, concerts, book clubs, and ladies’ luncheons. This March, 58 club members will embark on a Star Clipper cruise through the Caribbean, a testament to the strong sense of camaraderie within the Club.

While DPYC is a members-only establishment, Ward emphasized that the club maintains an open-door policy for those interested in exploring membership opportunities. “I’d like to remind everyone that our doors are open for Dana Point residents to stop by, take a tour, and meet our staff and directors,” Ward said. “If you have a passion for cruising, sailing, fishing, diving, racing, paddling, or community fundraising, we encourage you to pick up an application and learn more about our Club.”

Dana Point Yacht Club is a proud member of the Southern California Yachting Association and continues to uphold a tradition of excellence in yachting and community service.
