Passport to the Island Boat Show Brings Interactive Experience to Shelter Island

The event brings together six participating boat dealers, combining on-the-water exploration with a competitive twist.

A different kind of boat show is coming to San Diego this May, offering boaters a chance to explore Shelter Island in a more interactive and social way.

The Passport to the Island Boat Show, hosted by six local dealers—H & H Marine, IYC, Mikelson Yachts, Schock Boats, Silver Seas Yachts, and Yacht Coast Yacht Sales—is set for Saturday, May 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., transforming the traditional boat show format into an on-the-water experience that blends yacht viewing with a poker run-style event.

Rather than walking a single dock or exhibition space, attendees will move throughout Shelter Island, visiting participating dealer locations and marine businesses along the waterfront. At each stop, participants will collect a playing card as part of a self-guided route designed to showcase a range of vessels, brands, and industry partners.

The goal is simple. Build the best five-card poker hand by the end of the day.

Participants will begin by picking up a passport at their first stop, then continue from location to location, collecting cards while exploring yacht displays and engaging with exhibitors. At the conclusion of the event, the strongest hands will be awarded prizes from participating locations, adding a competitive element to what is typically a more passive experience.

Organizers say the format is intended to create a more dynamic and engaging environment for both seasoned boaters and those new to the market. By encouraging movement between locations, the event allows attendees to experience multiple dealerships and inventory options in a single day while maintaining a relaxed, open-air setting.

In addition to the poker run component, the event offers access to a range of luxury yachts and marine products, along with opportunities to connect directly with industry professionals. Participating stops will also feature exclusive giveaways and gifts, creating additional incentives for attendees to complete the full route.

The setting itself plays a key role in the experience. Shelter Island, known for its concentration of marinas, yacht brokers, and marine services, provides a natural backdrop for an event designed around exploration. The layout allows participants to move at their own pace while taking in one of Southern California’s most active boating hubs.

For those considering a purchase, the event offers a practical advantage. Instead of navigating crowded show floors, attendees can engage in more direct, one-on-one conversations with brokers and representatives, gaining a clearer understanding of available options across multiple brands.

At the same time, the casual structure appeals to boaters simply looking to spend a day on the docks in a social setting. With multiple stops, prize opportunities, and a built-in sense of progression, the event aims to balance entertainment with access.

As interest in alternative boat show formats continues to grow, events like the Passport to the Island Boat Show reflect a shift toward more experiential offerings. By combining elements of a traditional showcase with interactive features, the event provides a format that’s both informative and engaging.

For attendees, the result is a day that blends discovery, competition, and connection, all set against the backdrop of San Diego’s waterfront.

Participation is free, with attendees encouraged to RSVP in advance through any of the six participating boat dealers.
