she is a beautiful yacht my brother Donald Adams. Work for Joe Rose the owner at the time the movie Some Like It Hot was filmed aboard myself got to work with my brother after the filming repairing and painting after the camera work had marred the yacht John Adams was still aboard it when they film the movie dangerous Charter he actually played the dead body it was found on the top in the movie he also drove the speed boat across her bow before they placed the balsa wood replica but they ran through it with the Portola we did get to go see the preview of the movie it was sort of exciting. At the time she was docked down in Wilmington the fellows and Stewart by the Henry Ford drawbridge
That is so amazing! Would love to get in touch with you. Do you have any photographs of her during the time your brother worked for Joe Rose? We have her in Newport Beach at the moment. Would love to hear from you! [email protected]
The Portola I believe is in Alamitos marina docked by the Long beach marina headquarters (I thought it was harbor police but the map says otherwise). I walk right past it all the time.. I have seen it said various places that the portola was in the film some like it hot. But now I have found other sites that say she was not and that the boat in the was actually called the lovely lady I believe and had changed names a couple times and finally sank in a river in Miami in 2009… What I have not seen is anything or anyone explaining why there are two different boats that each say they are the boat that was in the film ? Someone must know what the truth is… Im rooting for the portola as I see her so often but clearly one of those claims must be wrong…. Can anyone shed some light on the issue ?
She was in the movie! the photographs with her and Marilyn Monroe clearly show it.
At the time Some Like It Hot was filmed, I lived aboard the ketch Four Winds at Newmark’s Yacht Centre where the Portola was moored. As there weren’t many kids living there (I was 12 at the time), I hung around with Joel Rose, Joe’s son. I remember being quite jealous that he got to meet Marilyn Monroe – my folks made me go to school. Over the nearly two years I lived at Newmark’s, I spent a good deal of time on and in the Portola and can attest to the fact that it was indeed the boat in the movie. The Portola was and is a classic boat. It’s good to see that it is well maintained.
Lovely lady was featured in Tequila Sunrise…
My Grandad Harry Adams skippered a ship named the Portola in San Diego in the late 50s and early 60s to the best of our knowledge. I have some items that are connected to the Portola and if there is interest would like to return them.
