U.S. SailGP Team Claims Victory in Sydney

The U.S. SailGP Team captured its first event win of the 2026 season at SailGP Sydney, held February 28 through March 1, 2026, in Sydney, Australia, marking a significant milestone for the restructured American squad.
After qualifying third for the winner-take-all Final, the U.S. crew delivered a decisive performance to secure victory over Great Britain, which finished second, and Spain, which took third. The win represents the team’s first event title since an ownership change in December 2023 ushered in a new crew and renewed focus on performance.
The regatta was characterized by extremely light and variable winds, particularly during the second day of qualifying. Foiling conditions were limited at the lower end of the wind range, creating tactical challenges across the fleet. Despite the unsettled breeze and congested racecourse, the U.S. team emerged as one of the most consistent performers of the day, posting qualifying finishes of 3rd, 1st and 6th.
Helm Taylor Canfield credited the team’s ability to stay in clean air and avoid traffic as a key factor in their success. In post-race comments, Canfield emphasized the importance of strong starts and disciplined execution in lighter conditions, noting that the crew was able to get off the line cleanly and maintain composure throughout the races.
In the Final, Emirates Great Britain initially controlled the early stages after winning the start. However, the Americans made a decisive move approaching a gate mid-race, overtaking the British team and capitalizing on clear air in the closing legs. From there, the U.S. squad extended its lead and held firm to the finish, sealing the victory.
The result signals continued progress for the American team, which has shown steady improvement in recent events. Canfield acknowledged that the group has focused heavily on process and consistency since its reorganization, and described the Sydney win as a major step forward in validating those efforts.
With the Sydney result, the defending Rolex SailGP champions from Great Britain move into first place in the overall standings with 28 points. Australia sits second with 25 points. The U.S. SailGP Team climbs into third overall with 20 points, entering the championship podium group as the season gains momentum.
The victory in Sydney not only boosts the Americans’ standings but also reestablishes the team as a contender in the high-speed, global racing series as SailGP continues its 2026 campaign.
